Emmausfestivalen 2022. 11-12 augusti på Strandgatan 20 i Mariehamn, Åland.

Emmausfestivalen är en omställningsfestival som genom kultur och kunskapsutbyte söker formar vår gemensamma framtid. Tillsammans skapar vi en mötesplats och en manifestation för hållbarhet, solidaritet och meningsfullt arbete. Låt oss fortsätta diskutera, leva och uppleva tillsammans!

Festivalen pågår under torsdag och fredag, den 11-12.8.2022, och ordnas på Emmaus bakgård på Strandgatan 20 i Mariehamn, Åland.

17:00 – Workshop: Cirkulär Elektronisk Musik med Havsmörker (AX)

En workshop för dig som är nyfiken på hur vi med hjälp av elektroniska instrument kan skapa musik av återbrukade ljud i form av fältinspelningar och samplingar. Du får genom olika övningar och tekniker lära dig om byggstenarna till loop-baserad musik samt grunderna i ljuddesign. Workshopen riktar sig till nybörjare inom området och passar för åldrarna 15 år och uppåt. Du kommer förutom att spela in ljud även få prova på lite analoga och elektroniska instrument. Målet är att vidga deltagarnas förståelse för hur allt som låter kan förvandlas till musik.

Alla kan vara med och lyssna men max 12 aktiva deltagare kan aktivt delta i övningarna. Anmälning på plats.

19:00 - Samtal: Fredsarbete i en ny säkerhetspolitisk kontext.

Laura Lodenius från Finlands fredsförbund och Björn Lindh från Olof Palmes Internationella center samtalar om hur förutsättningarna och formerna för fredsarbete förändrats i och med Rysslands krig mot Ukraina. Hur kan man aktivt arbeta för fred idag? Samtalet modereras av ABF-Ålands verksamhetsledare Mia Hanström och även publiken ges plats att delta.

Laura Lodenius är verksamhetsledare för Finlands Fredsförbund, en medborgarorganisation som arbetar för fred och är sakkunnig i fredsfrågor. De arbetar för kärnvapennedrustning och en effektivare kontroll av vapenhandel och att genom fredsfostran främja en ickevålds- och fredskultur.

Björn Lindh arbetar med omvärldsanalys och idédebatt på Olof Palmes Internationella Center. Han har bland annat samordnat projektet "Common Security 2022", som handlar om att omsätta Palmekommissionens koncept om gemensam säkerhet till vår tid. Björn har lång erfarenhet från flera organisationer som arbetar med utvecklingsbistånd. Han har arbetat i Regeringskansliet, liksom i Nicaragua och Afghanistan.

Mia Hanström arbetar med folkbildning, hon är verksamhetsledare för ABF-Åland Arbetarnas bildningsförbund och arbetar också med ungdomsarbete och jämställdhetsarbete.

20:00 - Trubadur Ehn (SE)

Den ständige Trubaduren och vispoeten Joakim Ehn ser fram emot att koka ihop den mest originella atmosfären för att berättandet och folksjälen ska kunna hänga med i svängarna under festivalen.

Varje spelning är hans första och hans sista, och till och med han vet inte mer än det enkla faktum att; Det kommer bli episkt och glädjerikt men också med en dos av melankoli och svårmod.

21:00 - leoblu (AX)

leoblu är solo-projektet av artisten, låtskrivaren och producenten Julia Carlsson. Ursprungligen från Åland, och numera bosatt i Berlin, så beskriver Julia sina influenser som “dammiga gator och djupa hav”. Inspirerad av dark-pop, bombastiskt minimalistiska ljudlandskap och melankoliska sångstämmor, så levererar hon sina djupaste tankar och bortglömda känslor insvept i sammetslen drömpop.

Efter momentum med sin låt “still dancing”, som blev en del av soundtracket till Netflix-serien “The Protector”, så har Julia uppträtt på indie-festivaler och klubbscener runtom i världen; från Mariehamn, till Taipei – från Madrid, till Buenos Aires.

I sommar, så är leoblu aktuell med ny musik – egenproducerade verk som blandar multidimensionella stämmor med en sårbar, nyfunnen frihet.

22:00 - Maija Kauhanen (FI)

One-Woman Orchestra - A powerfully expressive voice, deep-rooted kantele and inventive percussion: fleet-fingered virtuoso and one-woman band Maija Kauhanen specializes in the rare Saarijärvi kantele from Central Finland and its old and rare playing techniques. Weaving together polyrhythms and organic beats, she creates unique soundscapes and compelling grooves.

Multi-awarded Maija Kauhanen is one of the most internationally successful folk musicians from Finland and has toured over 30 countries around Europe, Asia and America.

On her second solo album Menneet (The Past, Nordic Notes 5/2022), Kauhanen takes a step towards being a singer-songwriter without losing the strong roots in tradition. The music draws influences from folk music, indie pop and film scores and tells stories of personal space and setting one’s boundaries. How much space is enough? How can a personal space be maintained and cherished, without letting it hold us back?

Kauhanen specializes in the rare Saarijärvi kantele from Central Finland. She plays the kantele in various tunings and with different playing styles, using her fingers, tiny wooden sticks as plectrums, a cello bow, an E-bow as well as other preparation materials like Blu Tack. Her percussion set consists of a kick drum, juju bean shaker, cymbals, wind bells, enamel pots and bowls, silver plates, metal muffin tins, trays and assorted kitchen utensils found at flea markets.

Maija Kauhanen’s vocal technique is inspired by imitating instrument sounds, rural music traditions of Finland and Karelia as well as the Swedish kulning vocal tradition

18:00 - Boksläpp ’Med Doft av 100 Kryddor’

Den 12 augusti lanseras boken ”Med doft av 100 kryddor – 100 berättelser från kvinnor som flyttat till Åland” på det åländska förlaget PQR. I boken berättar 100 inflyttade kvinnor ärligt och öppet om flytten till Åland, mötet med den nya kulturen och språket. Det handlar om svårigheter, glädjeämnen, hemlängtan, samt om den svåra konsten att anpassa sig tillräckligt mycket för att passa in, men ändå inte så mycket att du förlorar dig själv.

Samtalet förs mellan Liz Lindvall och Mercedes Urbano-Winquist tillsammans med en panel på fem av bokens medverkande. Samtalet modereras av Felicia Bredenberg, journalist på Ålands radio.

19:00 - Samtal: Fri rörlighet och öppet välkomnande; flyktingskap i Europa och på Åland idag

Samtal mellan Monika von Frenckell, lokalt engagerad för flyktingar på Åland, Carina Aaltonen, ordförande för Emmaus Europa och Emmaus Åland. Moderator: Martha Hannus.

Europa och Åland har öppnat sina armar för flyktingar från Ukraina. Hur kan vi skapa en uthållighet i solidariteten med människor på flykt? Emmaus Europa, som länge stått upp för rätten till fri rörlighet och mot stängda europeiska gränser. arbetar just nu med en kampanj i anslutning till EU:s nya migrations- och asylpakt. Hur är det egentligen att komma till Åland som flykting idag? Hur kan vi som samhälle stärka vår förmåga att välkomna fler människor hit? Hur kan vi arbeta för ett humant mottagande av alla som lämnar sitt land för att söka ett bättre liv?

20:00 – Workshop: Dansa Hip hop / Grooves med Sibel Özer och Patrik Rydmark (SE)

Följ med på en resa i hiphopens tecken med moves och grooves från 80, 90 och 2000-talet! Är du nybörjare eller har dansat hela ditt liv spelar ingen roll! Alla är välkomna! Vi fokuserar på party steps, grooves och framförallt, good vibes!

Patrik och Sibel är två dansare med influenser från flera håll. Båda är utbildade i Stockholm och har sedan dansat sig vidare till andra delar av världen, bland annat New York och Gran Canaria.

Med olika erfarenheter i bagaget har de nu förts samman genom hiphopen och undervisar på olika skolor i Stockholm.

Djup Frid is an ecstatic practice of playing Rock n’ roll in tongues. But it is not quite that. It sucks its sonical inspiration from the sleepy violence of suburbs in Dnipro on one side of its existential pendulum. On the other side it draws its will to live from the Baptist Church of Krivij Rih. But it's not exactly like that. So what is it? Well, it might be described as a feeling of relief when you realize that you forgot about that brain tumor you thought you had and now you will probably live for a while longer. Or a hand that is cold on your belly that is hot. It’s close but not precisely that. Well. Now you know it. And now you need it. And you can have it. Come and see it. From top of the head. 22:00 - Jelly Crystal (SE)

Filip Johnson är sångaren, låtskrivaren och multi-instrumentalisten bakom soloprojektet Jelly Crystal. Med rötterna i pophistoriens klassiska melodier och den svenska indierockscenen har han skapat ett helt eget uttryck som andas lika mycket dåtid som framtid.

Sedan debuten 2017 har Jelly Crystal släppt en rad hyllade singlar, två EP:n och flera korsbefruktade samarbeten med artister som Shitkid, Adrian Lux, Sibille Attar, Esther och Stella Explorer. Utöver soloprojektet har han även funnits med i bandkonstellationer som HOLY och Vacation Forever, samt medverkade på Kite’s legendariska spelning på Kungliga Operan i slutet av 2020.

2021 släpptes det kritikerrosade debutalbumet ”Freak Show”, där han var fortsatt trogen allt det som tidigare kännetecknat honom som artist - genom experimentell och okonventionell pop. Albumet ledde även till utmärkelsen ”Årets Kompositör” på Manifestgalan med motiveringen; ”Kompositionerna är på ytan elegant tidlösa och klassiska men genomsyras av ett stökigt, fritt och drabbande uttryck. Ett djärvt mångfacetterat och vågat debutalbum med låtar som dröjer sig kvar”.

Under våren 2022 är Jelly Crystal aktuell med EP:n ”ILY”, planerad till juni, som föregås av singlarna ”Happy Ending” ft. Alice Boman och ”I Tryyy” ft. Seinabo Sey.

Emmausfestivalen’s goal is to be a meeting place and a manifestation of sustainability, a transition festival which through culture and sharing knowledge form our collective future. Now more than ever we must continue to discuss, live and experience together!

5 pm - Workshop: Circular Electronic Music with Havsmörker (AX)

This workshop is for you who are curious about how we can create music by using the sounds available around us and manipulate them with electronic instruments through field recordings and sampling. Through various exercises and techniques you will learn about the building blocks of loop-based music and the basics of sound design. The workshop is aimed at beginners and is suitable for the age of 15 and up. Apart from recording sounds you will have the chance to try out some analog and digital electronic instruments. Our hope is to broaden the participants' understanding of how everything that sounds can be made into music.

Everyone can witness and listen but a maximum of 12 persons can actively participate in the recording, etc. Sign-up on location.

7 pm - Talks: Peace work in a new security political situation

Laura Lodenius from ‘Finlands fredsförbund’ and Björn Lindh from Olof Palmes Internationella Center discuss how the conditions for peace work have changed with the Russian war against Ukraine. How can we actively work towards peace today? The discussions will be moderated by Mia Hanström from ABF-Åland and the audience is invited to be a part of the discussions.

Laura Lodenius is managing director of ‘Finlands Fredsförbund’, a citizen organization that works for peace, and has extensive knowledge in the field. They work with nuclear disarmament, developing efficient control of arms dealing as well as fostering a non-violence and peace culture.

Björn Lindh works with global analysis and idea debate at Olof Palme International Center. He coordinated the project ‘Common Security 2022’, which sought to put into action the Palme Comissions’ concept of mutual security in our time. Björn has a lot of experience from several different organisations working with development aid. He has worked at the Swedish chancellery, as well as in Nicaragua and Afghanistan.

Mia Hanström works with popular education, she is executive manager of ABF-Åland Arbetarnas bildningsförbund and with youth programs and equality.

The folk singer and lyricist Joakim Ehn is looking forward to cooking up the most unique atmosphere for the audience to experience the art of storytelling and folk soul at the festival.

Every show is his first and his last and even he doesn’t know more than the simple fact that; it will be epic and joyful with a touch of melancholy.

leoblu is the solo project of the artist, songwriter and producer, Julia Carlsson. Originally from The Aland Islands, currently living in Berlin, Julia describes her influences as “dusty streets and deep seas”. Inspired by dark-pop, bombastic yet minimalist soundscapes and melancholic vocal harmonies, she delivers her deepest thoughts and forgotten emotions wrapped in a silky smooth dream pop.

Since the momentum gathered with her song ‘still dancing’, which became part of the soundtrack of the Netflix-series ‘The Protector’, Julia has been performing at indie-festivals and club venues around the world; from Mariehamn to Taipei, Madrid and Buenos Aires.

The 12th of August sees the release of the book, ‘Med Doft Av 100 Kryddor - 100 berättelser från kvinnor som flyttat till Åland’, on the Alandic publisher PQR. In the book 100 women who has migrated to Aland speaks openly about the move to the islands, meeting the new culture and language. They talk about the difficulties, joys, homesickness and the art of adjusting enough to fit in while not losing oneself in the process.

Europe and The Aland Islands have opened their arms to refugees from Ukraine. How can we create a durable solidarity with fleeing people? Emmaus Europe, which for long has stood up for the right to free movement and against closed borders, are currently working on a campaign in regards to EU’s new migration and asylum pact. How are you actually received coming to The Aland Islands today? How can we as a society strengthen our ability to welcome more people? How can we work towards a more humane reception of everyone who leaves their country in search of a better life?

8 pm - Workshop: Dance Hip hop + Grooves w/ Sibel Özer & Patrik Rydmark (SE)

Join Sibel and Patrik on a journey of Hip Hop with moves and grooves from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s! Whether you’re a beginner or have been dancing your whole life doesn’t matter. Everyone is welcome. We will focus on party steps, grooves and above all, good vibes!

Patrik and Sibel are two dancers with different influences. They were both educated in dance in Stockholm and have been dancing around the world, in New York and Gran Canaria among other places. With different experiences in the baggage they have come together through Hip Hop and are teaching in several schools around Stockholm.

So bring your best sneakers and come dance with us! It’s gonna be a vibe!

Djup Frid is an ecstatic practice of playing Rock n’ roll in tongues. But it is not quite that. It sucks its sonical inspiration from the sleepy violence of suburbs in Dnipro on one side of its existential pendulum. On the other side it draws its will to live from the Baptist Church of Kryviy Rih. But it's not exactly like that. So what is it? Well, it might be described as a feeling of relief when you realize that you forgot about that brain tumor you thought you had and now you will probably live for a while longer. Or a hand that is cold on your belly that is hot. It’s close but not precisely that. Well. Now you know it. And now you need it. And you can have it. Come and see it. From top of the head. And bottom of the heart.

10 pm - Jelly Crystal (SE)

Filip Johnson is the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist behind the project Jelly Crystal. With roots in pop history's classic melodies and the Swedish indie rock scene, he has created a wholly unique expression that embodies the past as much as the future.

Since his debut 2017 Jelly Crystal has released many celebrated singles, two EPs and several cross breeding collaborations with artists like ShitKid, Adrian Lux, Sibille Attar, Esther and Stella Explorer. Apart from his solo project he has also been part of bands like Holy and Vacation Forever, as well as participating at Kite’s legendary performance on The Swedish Royal Opera at the end of 2020.

2022 saw the release of the critically acclaimed debut album ‘Freak Show’, true to his earlier experimental and unconventional pop. The LP led to a series of awards as “Composer of the Year” at The Manifestgalan with the motivation; “On the surface the compositions are elegantly timeless but are permeated with a rough, free and affecting expression. A bold, multifaceted and daring debut album with songs that linger”.

Come spring 2022 Jelly Crystal has released the EP “ILY” which was preceded by the singles “Happy Ending” ft. Alice Boman and “I Tryyy” ft. Seinabo Sey.

Chef and food ecologist Oscar Lindholm pops up at Emmausfestivalen, friday 12th of August. ‘Emmaus Stadsodling’ grows the most amazing greens and herbs which Oscar then prepares into delicious meals for us to enjoy at the festival. Climate smart, vegetarian and extraordinarily tasty! Welcome!

We offer textile bags at cost price and bed sheets, but you can also bring your own t-shirt or similar. Angel Perez will hold the workshop.
